How to Track Down that Pesky Inspiration
By Stephanie Greenhalgh

UGH!  I can’t help but stare mindlessly at the computer. I finally have the time to write, yet nothing, not even a glimmer of something is coming to mind. How can that possibly be??? This morning on my walk alone, I had four great ideas! What happened to them? Where did they go? What were they, again?

Often times, this is what my writing looks like. That pesky little inspiration can be a tricky one to hang onto — evasive little minx that she is — (yes, I’m certain she’s a woman). There are a few places she haunts with some sort of regularity: my workouts or walks, the car (only when I’m driving) or while I’m showering. Why you ask? Well, duh! It’s because I don’t have a pen or I’m unable to quickly cement the idea somewhere referred to later. By the time, I make it through the hustle and bustle of the day and get to my laptop, guess what? Nine times out of ten, I can’t find my way back to the great ideas I had earlier. So what is a girl to do? Whine? Wallow? Slam her head on the desk and wait for that evasive inspiration to frolic on by once again?

Well, no, that would be a ridiculous waste of time. Inspiration is all around us and it’s more about finding a way to tap into it. My best ideas come from anything: a picture, a dream, a glimmer, a silly thought, an outrageous experience.

Ideally, inspiration would tickle my thoughts during the subconscious and then in the morning there would be a great awakening of feverish thoughts, followed by a day to do nothing but write. Let’s face it. That is just not practical. So it’s important to look for inspiration in everyday items and make them extraordinary. A shoe can be a name: Betula. A particularly vivid and twisted Facebook post about a dream can turn into the beginning of a story. A fantastic coat on the website of a darling boutique can be the perfect cloak. A silly broken branch can be some sort of special magical tool. It all comes down to making the most of what you have and having fun with it!

Still feeling uninspired? Step away from the computer and do something that you enjoy: spend time with your children, gab with a good friend, go out to dinner, have a glass of wine, or hit the gym. It’s not about doing the things on my list; it’s about finding your inner passion and making your own list. If that still doesn’t work, find a good book and curl up on the couch. Happy Writing!

Here's an excerpt!

The clock on the kitchen wall said 10:50 p.m. I walked back into the living room to catch the eleven o’clock news since I had slept through the six o’clock.

“BREAKING NEWS TONIGHT!” An announcer said. “A FLIGHT OUT OF PENNSYLVANIA THAT WAS HEADED FOR EUROPE HAS CRASHED SOMEWHERE OVER THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.” I dropped to my knees as I listened to the reporter repeat the breaking news. “DELTA AIRLINE FLIGHT 179 HAS BEEN REPORTED TO HAVE CRASHED SOMEWHERE OVER THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. THERE WERE 223 PEOPLE ON BOARD THIS PLANE. THE US COAST GUARDS ALONG WITH THE MARINES ARE SEARCHING FOR ANY DEBRIS OR BODIES. I REPEAT DELTA AIRLINE FLIGHT 179 HAS CRASHED WITH 223 PEOPLE ON BOARD.”

I dropped to my knees. My heart, stomach and lungs all collapsed at once as I listened to the unimaginable. I stared at the screen trying to breathe when panic set in. I scanned the room for the phone and found it lying on the end table, then quickly dialed Greg's number.

“SHIT! SHIT! SHIT!” I hung up and redialed again. Tears flooded my eyes, making it hard for me to see the numbers. “Please don’t let it be them. Dear God, please don’t let it be them. Please, please!” I pleaded.

This review is from: Cambria, Cambria Series, Book 1 (Kindle Edition)
Fantasy is my go-to genre when I want to get lost in another world. Cambria is a beautiful story that weaves so many of the fantastic fantasy themes together and produces a page-turning book I didn't want to put down!Seth is a young man going to visit his Uncle Herman one summer and discovers he and his family is much more than he ever dreamed. He finds himself in the world Cambria, a mystical place where honor and loyalty are more than just words, where knights, Kings, dragons and magic are more than just legends lost to history. Seth embarks on a true Hero's Journey, struggling to find his identity and purpose, battling darkness and evil, and finding romance in the arms of the lovely Brianna. But don't be misled into thinking this is a story that has been told countless times, because it's not! It has wonderful classic elements, but it's wholly unique with unexpected twists and suprises. The characters were easy to connect with, and I found myself invested in them very early on. Seth, coming from a modern day realm, and Brianna and her friends existing in Cambria, creates a lovely blend; a fairy-tale world that keeps a grip on the present. The dialogue and descriptions are stirring and the author has an excellent grasp on language. Several times I was shaking my head in awe because I could so easily visualize what was being described, and I was able to do so not because of lengthy, tedious, paragraphs but rather through eloquent, well-chosen word combinations. The world building was very good and when I cicked the last page, I found myself saddened that I was going to have to leave this world behind. I hope there will be another book, and if so I will snatch it up immediately!
Five stars from me, highly recommended!
